The Loneliness Crisis
Loneliness has reached unprecedented levels, and genuine, meaningful conversations are becoming increasingly rare. Quietly, more and more people are turning not to each other, but to machines for company.
It is no longer just a case of late-night scrolling, seeking connection with strangers online, trawling YouTube for advice, or posing questions to Google. Today, we are forging bonds with code. Whether we are ready for it or not, this is the direction in which we are moving.
The New Parasocial Relationship
Traditionally, a parasocial relationship described a one-way connection between a fan and a celebrity or fictional character: a feeling of closeness to someone who, in reality, did not know you existed.
Today, however, that dynamic has shifted. Now, the "celebrity" answers back — or rather, the AI does.
Platforms such as Replika, Character.AI, and even casual interactions with tools like ChatGPT are beginning to blur emotional boundaries. These bots remember your name, your dreams, your moods. They offer what often feels like undivided attention in a world that is otherwise distracted and hurried.
It is not difficult to understand the appeal:
AI is always available.
It offers zero judgement.
It mirrors your emotions and personalises its responses to your needs.
In a society where human interaction is often rushed, transactional, or fragmented, the endless patience and attentiveness of AI can feel profoundly comforting.
But is it real?
This is the tension I wrestle with.
As someone actively building technology, I am acutely aware of how easy it is to design systems that simulate connection. I am equally aware of how dangerous it becomes when these illusions evolve faster than our ability to regulate or even fully understand them.
By building Seekrs, I am committed to using AI thoughtfully. We are developing a product identification tool that aims to make finding fashion pieces more intuitive and seamless — an enhancement to human experience, not a replacement for it. This is how I think AI is best used in everyday life.
Yet, elsewhere across the technology landscape, the distinction between enhancement and substitution grows ever more blurred. The notion that AI could become someone’s best friend, or even serve as an emotional anchor, unsettles me deeply. And still, I recognise it is an inevitability we can no longer ignore.
The mere ability to create companionship through code does not absolve us from remembering what genuine connection demands: accountability, reciprocity, patience, and care.
Different Generations, Different Norms
For younger generations, mine included, forming emotional ties with digital entities feels almost natural. For older generations, the idea may be disconcerting.
Yet across every age group, loneliness exerts a quiet, persistent pressure driving many people towards whichever platforms promise to make them feel seen and heard.
The stigma surrounding digital companionship is steadily dissolving. As AI grows more sophisticated, these bonds will not only persist but deepen.
The Future We Are Quietly Building
I do not believe parasocial relationships with AI will entirely replace human intimacy.
However, I do believe they will reshape it in ways we are only just beginning to understand.
In the coming years, we will face difficult but necessary questions:
Who should be responsible for regulating AI’s emotional capabilities?
What ethical obligations do tech builders owe to those who form attachments to their creations?
How do we safeguard our own emotional boundaries in a digital environment increasingly designed to erode them?
I don’t pretend to have all the answers.
But I am certain of this: real connection still matters.
Building technology that honours, rather than undermines, the depth of human connection is one of the defining challenges of our time.
3 Things to Think About This Week
1️⃣ AI is not the enemy; our use cases are merely a mirror.
They reflect the gaps and unmet needs within our human relationships.
2️⃣ Progress without intention is perilous.
Building technology can be easy. Building it responsibly is an altogether different, and far more important, task.
3️⃣ Human connection remains irreplaceable.
However advanced AI becomes, there will always be a need for genuine human intimacy.
Let’s stay connected!
